“We all live off his generous abundance, gift after gift after gift. We got the basics from Moses, and then this exuberant giving and receiving, this endless knowing and understanding– all this came through Jesus, the Messiah. No one has ever seen God, not so much as a glimpse. This one-of-a-kind God-Expression, who exists at the very heart of the Father, has made him plain as day.” -John 1:16-18
This season of thanksgiving, I pray our understanding grows. That we can see more clearly the generous abundance of our Father… that we live off His generous gifts, gift after gift after gift.
In reading Isaiah, I am reminded of our tendency to rely on what we think we see for both protection and nourishment: “You made plans, but not mine. You make deals, but not in my Spirit… Going off to Egypt without so much as asking me, running off to Pharaoh for protection, expecting to hide out in Egypt… They look big and important, true… but there’s nothing to them. Anyone stupid enough to trust them will end up looking stupid – all show, no substance… Thinking you can buy protection…” Isaiah 30
And in that running off, we can so easily overlook Him. Our vision gets so small; we lose sight of His bigness, His Goodness, His desire to delight in and with us. We are all going through something. There is peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding, in knowing and understanding - He is enough… more than enough… and He, the greatest gift of all, can never be taken from us.
Peace be with us all. And let us give thanks. Amen.
